Fords Virtual Reality Shopping Experience

  • Future virtual reality technology offers a more convenient way to “try before you buy”
  • Test drives from home could be desert drives in an SUV – or doing school run in your PJs
  • Shoppers suffer “decider’s dilemma” and want to sample products and services
  • Ford foresees consumers could one day try any car, anywhere, and for as long as they want
  • Company makes extensive use of virtual reality tech for design of the all-new Ford Fiesta

The advent of virtual reality (VR) technology is predicted to fundamentally change the way we live over the coming decades. *

From the way we play video games at home, or watching movies at the cinema, we will see a revolution in VR . To be fair does it does seem a great way to interact with products or services that we are interested in. This could open up a new way how we test products, or try different things and Ford sees cars as no difference.

We already use VR to a smaller extent, from trying on glasses or clothes to see how they suit us.  As Car buying is a huge decision for most of us, using VR to assist and enhance our purchasse decison seems like a logical next step.

It could allow us to try out various models and colour choices at a time and location that suits our needs, potentially we could do test drives over different locations and conditions, down to seeing what your potential new vehicle looks like on your driveway. So when we reach the dealership, we have a much better idea of what we want.

Ford is currently exploring the potential of a range of virtual and augmented reality technologies to layer digital holograms onto the real world that could within the next decade allow people to interact with every aspect of products at their convenience.
