Avon ZX7 tyre review

There is more of a wider tyre choice than ever, so when it comes to selecting a new set its important we get it right. This is not just due to the expense, but more importantly the safety aspect. We have been testing the Avon ZX7, designed for medium to large SUV. We fitted a set of 235/60/18 to a Range Rover Evoque, and conducted testing over a range of road conditions and surfaces. All of the test were completed in dry weather conditions.

Our first drive was on some countryside B roads. The Avon ZX7 handled the very uneven potholed surfaces well. They were able to keep road noise down to a good level, while maintaining a relatively smooth ride considering the poor road surface. Only the larger crater size ones provided any real intrusion to the inside of the car, which to be honest is pretty much expected.

When driving on faster A-roads we did notice a little bit more road noise but nothing that is overly concerning or distracting. This is contributed to Avon ZX7’s Noise Damping Structures (lines), which help break up the noise or ‘pipe resonance’ that forms between the circumferential grooves in the tyre and the road surface.

For both A and B roads, the grip was excellent and steering was responsive with a good amount of feedback. During motorway driving the Avon tyres were an absolute delight, with the ZX7 feeling responsive at speed. As with the previous tests, steering feedback was precise, helping in providing driver confidence while traveling at motorway speeds.

The Range Rover Evoque with the Avon’s fitted felt very assured under breaking during a range of speeds and road conditions. This is carried on during cornering, you get a good feel of the grip that comes from the ZX7 as the vehicle was not twitchy and felt planted during cornering. This again was tested during normal driving conditions and speeds.

Overall I would recommend the Avon ZX7 as a good all round tyre. They dealt with the test situations very well, combine this with the reasonable cost, making them an attractive potential purchase for those looking for their next set of tyres.
